20 Bone-chilling Pictures That Were Taken Right Before Tragedy Struck

A photograph can capture a moment in time. No matter what happens in real life a photo stays the same. These images are the perfect example of such ghosts from the past.


 This picture was taken on Malaysia Airlines Flight 17. While flying over eastern Ukraine the plane was shot down out of the sky killing all 283 passengers and 15 crew on board. The reason was the growing unrest in Russia and the pro-separatist movement.

Pavel Kashin
 It was a normal day for Freerunner Pavel Kashin. What he didn't know was this performance would go so horribly wrong. This picture is the last picture of him alive before he falls to his death while performing a back flip.

 A plane full of politicians almost sounds like the beginning of a cruel joke. In 1943, Mayor of St. Louis, William D. Becker and the pictured politicians, all died after their military flight test ended in a crash.

The Kelly Family
 This is a picture of the Kelly family enjoying a New York Yankees game on Sept. 10. Their father died the next day in the 9/11 attack.

Mount Etna
 The volcanic eruption of Mt. Etna in Sicily, Italy. Mount Etna is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and is in an almost constant state of activity.

Paul Walker
 This is a picture of Paul Walker taken on November 30, 2013. The day of his car crash.

 Robert Overacker was trying to draw attention to the plight of homelessness with a stunt in which he jumped over Niagra Falls in a jet-ski. His parachute failed to open and he died hours later at the hospital.

 This picture captures astronauts preparing to board the Challenger space shuttle, which broke apart 73 seconds into its flight and killed all on-board, including Christa McAuliffe who was going to be the first teacher in space.


 At the time of its construction, the Titanic was one of the largest ships ever built and was considered “unsinkable.” This is the last photograph taken of the boat before it famously sank April 14, 1912.

 A photo was captured while the Soviet guerrilla team executed a ‘traitor’ during the WW2 in 1944.

Figure Skating
 This is the entire US skating figure team of 1961. The star-spangled athletes were on their way to compete at the 1961 World Figure Skating Championships in Prague. The dream went up in flames when the plane went down in Belgium, all 72 people on board were killed.

James Dean
 James Dean’s last picture alive before he crashed his Porsche 550 Spyder and died on the spot.

John Lennon
 This photo of ex-Beatle John Lennon signing an autograph was taken the day he was shot. The man beside him? His killer Mark David Chapman.

Robin Williams
 Robin Williams’ last picture with a fan in an ice cream shop before he took his own life in 2014. You can see that he was fighting for his life against Lewy body disease (LBD), a form of dementia.

Dave Sanders
 William "Dave" Sanders was a computer and business teacher at Columbine. He lost his life at the Columbine High School Massacre. He, along with two of the school's janitors, helped get more than 100 students out of the path of danger by herding them away from the shooters.

 Nurse Mayinga N’Seka is captured here treating patients during the first ebola outbreak in 1976. Days later she would contract and eventually succumb to the disease.

Mt. Everest
 This is the last photograph taken of explorers George Mallory and Sandy Irvine during their 1924 attempt to reach the summit of Mt. Everest. Neither man made it back alive.

Martin Luther King Jr.
 Here, Martin Luther King, Jr. is photographed on the third floor balcony outside his room at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee. He was shot and killed on the same balcony the very next day.

Into The Wild
 Christopher McCandless snapped this self-portrait at a well-known hiking landmark in the Alaskan wilderness where eventually he starved to death in August of 1992. The Movie 'Into The Wild' is based on his life.

Ayano Tokumasu
Japanese student Ayano Tokumasu is seen here in the background just moments before she leaned too far over the railing and fell into the Niagra Falls.
